Poem: ‘AMALGAMATION/ALIENATION’

One hundred years and unsuccessful

Turks & Caicos, plans to join us

become a part of Nova Scotia

or so the vote said

bringing to this Great White Dominion

an annex of the United Kingdom

between Christopher Columbus

and P.M. Borden

they’re trading snow for salt

that’d be all right I said

have a place in the Caribbean

Canadians can go

with a Canadian lifestyle:

reliable healthcare, a small film industry

international community

English, French

and the Loonie

Canada’s Canada he said

ain’t gon’ live down there

with all them _______

those people

now, the end of February

and the roads

covered by last night’s blizzard:

kick slush off the tires

scrape the windows, icy morning

must stop at Tim’s

stubborn comfort

I could tell what he was thinking:

the cold comes

with the territory, I ain’t leavin’

and they sure as hell

ain’t comin’ here.
